To improve the efficacy of fluconazole in patients with vaginal candidiasis, the purpose of this study was to determine whether it would be clinically useful in patients with vulvovaginal candidiasis. Ten patients were randomized to two treatment arms (n = 5) or placebo (n = 3). The patients were examined and treated for candidiasis. The patients were also evaluated for vaginal pH. A computer-generated random sample of seven patients were evaluated, and seven of them were treated with either fluconazole (100 mg) or placebo. All patients who were treated with either fluconazole or placebo were treated with a vaginal pH of 7.1. Fluconazole treatment was associated with an increase in vaginal pH of 7.1 and a decrease in vaginal pH of 4.5. However, the difference in vaginal pH was not statistically significant between the two treatment groups. Patients treated with either fluconazole or placebo had an average of a mean of 2.8 and 2.2 pups, respectively. In the seven patients treated with either fluconazole or placebo, the mean vaginal pH was 7.1 and 4.5 respectively. The mean difference in the mean pH between the two treatment groups was 3.2. When the vaginal pH was 7.1 or 4.5, the mean difference in the mean vaginal pH was only 0.3. When the vaginal pH was 7.1 or 4.5, there was a statistically significant difference in mean vaginal pH between the two treatment groups, which was significantly different from the mean vaginal pH 7.1 between the two treatment groups, however, there was no statistically significant difference in the mean vaginal pH between the two treatment groups. The clinical significance of the improvement in vaginal pH from fluconazole treatment is unknown.
